Easter Concert

João Domingos Bomtempo’s Requiem Mass is a monument of our history. Sober, with a solid structure, it fits in with the movement that just over 200 years ago advocated for the country’s social reform. It was a prelude to the Liberal Revolution that overthrew monarchic absolutism and paved the way for the constitutional regime. The dedication to the memory of Luís Vaz de Camões conveyed its aspiration to revive that patriotic ideal. In 1936, in his Litanies à la Vierge noire, Francis Poulenc also used sacred music to express a political confrontation, this time in France, between conservative rural traditions and the structural reforms of the Front Populaire.
